Job Stress

Stress is a physical phenomenon that causes bodily or mental unrest. It can be caused by major changes in one’s life, such as marriage, pregnancy, divorce, transfer to a new school, death of a loved one, or geographic mobility. Workplace pressures, such as work overload, conflicts with colleagues or boss, or competition can also give rise to a lot of stress.

Certain environmental factors, including financial problems, parenting, family issues, travel or other disappointments may also lead to stress. Such stress can give rise to a number of symptoms, including anxiousness, irritability, forgetfulness, low self-esteem, nervousness, impulsive actions and health issues. However, stress can be overcome by following a number of guidelines.

One of the most vital paths to manage stress is thru maintaining robust social support systems. Folks with strong social support systems have less physical and emotional issues related to stress than less connected one. Spouses, children, parents, friends, business associates, associates, neighbors are all part of our social system.

Yet another thing that is crucial to curb stress is managing time. Organize your jobs listed by concern and ensure that you do not commit more than you can deliver in order to avoid stress. Calendars or planners work as useful tools to help organize your jobs. Keeping a track of where you waste your times may also be valuable.

Meditation and relaxation strategies help control stress and improve psychological and physical well being. It is feasible to learn these methodologies in a class or at home. Audio and video CDs of these methodologies are simply available.Relax

Good diet is the key to a stress free life. A sound sleep of at least 8 hours per day is also must. Make yourself physically and emotionally occupied with some helpful hobbies, such as painting, writing, gardening, playing for example. Therefore , you would be in a position to minimize stress from your life significantly. Upbeat approach towards life is the only way to beat stress. Try to maintain a good sense of humor, as it might help you’re taking things lightly.

Try to refrain from addictive habits like alcohol, betting or the use of addictive substances. These habits can create personal conflicts and irritate the situation even further.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of chronic stress, then it is advised that you see your health care provider. He will evaluate the effects of stress on your physical well being, if any and suggest means to deal with the same.

One can also consider stress-management counseling from a mental health professional. Stress counseling and talk therapy help manage stress. A counselor would identify the problematic areas in your life and work on strategies to control your most stressful situations or moments.

Thus, you can easily manage stress with the help of these simple stress management tips. You need not do any of them especially. Just make them your habit and they would come to your naturally after that. These simple lifestyle changes would surely help you lead a stress free life.

Work is one of the biggest causes of stress in our life. Not only it makes us stressed and affects our personal life but when we are stressed our productivity is decreased and consequently we are faced with even greater stress at work. In order to improve our life and increase our productivity we have to know some of the stress relief techniques to reduce the stress effectively.

There are several ways to reduce the stress at work and we will name some of the most successful and effective that will guide you to more happy and relaxed workplace.

Breathe properly
This is a great stress reducer not only at work but any time you are faced with the stress. It helps us relax and release the tension out of our body. Try to inhale slowly through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth, do this repeatedly and in a while you will feel calmer.

Organize
People tend to not organize with the belief that it only ties them more to their work. But proper organization skills do the opposite. With your schedules and tasks all planned out in an orderly manner, you actually have more time to do the things you truly enjoy and you avoid the unnecessary surprises and lack of time that could put the stress and the pressure on you.

Take Short breaks
Put away your work, go for a walk around the office or in front of the office building, exercise, stretch, squeeze stress balls or try to meditate. Do this for few minutes every once in a while and you will feel recharged and prepared to continue with work.

Take lunch break
Everybody has to eat and relax for a while. While you are eating make sure that your mind is not concerned with work but think of something pleasant or talk with coworkers. Never mix the lunch with work because in that way your mind will get no rest and your productivity will only slow down.

Be positive
Always think positive and try to face the problem optimistically and constructively. Do not thing of the worse and start panicing as soon as you face the problem but be confident that you are able to solve it. Do not let small things to disturb you but rather look at them as unimportant part of our life that can you will easily overcome.

Enjoy at work
Of course you think that this can be easier said than done but the first important thing that can lead to stress free workplace is the actual job or career you have. If you do something that does not interest you and you do not enjoy it you will not be able to reduce the stress and you will always feel unpleasant. Choose the proper job for you and build the career you like. Do not care for the others and do not strive to get enormous amounts of money if you will be unhappy at your work. Rather choose less paid job and less reputable career if it will make you happier.

Follow these simple and easy stress relief techniques and try to find some other ways that will help to bust the stress out of your body. As long as you understand the ways the stress works and what can be done about it you will be able to live a happy and relaxed life.

Stress Relief Management: The Origins Of Stress Research

Hans SelyeHans Selye is considered the first researcher who was able to assign a meaning to a syndrome he discovered which was destroying productivity in business and was causing burnout in many people. Selye complained several times that if his knowledge of English had been more precise, he would have gone down in history as the father of the “strain” concept.

Although Selye was fluent in at least eight languages, including English, and could converse in another half dozen, his choice of “stress” to describe the non-specific response syndrome he discovered, was unfortunate. He had used “stress” in his initial letter to the Editor of Nature in 1936, who suggested that it be deleted since this implied nervous strain and substituted alarm reaction. He was also unaware that stress had been used for centuries in physics to explain elasticity, the property of a material that allows it to resume its original size and shape after having been compressed or stretched by an external force. As expressed in Hooke’s Law of 1658, the magnitude of an external force, or stress, produces a proportional amount of deformation, or strain, in a malleable metal.

This created considerable confusion when his research had to be translated into foreign languages. There was no suitable word or phrase that could convey what he meant, since he was really describing strain. In 1946, when he was asked to give an address at the prestigious Collège de France, where Bernard and Pasteur had been friendly rivals, the academicians responsible for maintaining the purity of the French language struggled with this problem for several days, and subsequently decided that a new word would have to be created. Apparently, the male chauvinists prevailed, and le stress was born, quickly followedStress Management by el stress, il stress, lo stress, der stress in other European languages, and similar neologisms in Russian, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. Stress is one of the very few words that are preserved in English in languages that do not use the Roman alphabet. Selye was fond of sending colleagues and friends’ cards containing his advice on how to conduct their professional and personal lives, as illustrated below:

Stress management: How do you react during stressful situations? No wonder you’re stressed. You’re doing more with fewer resources every day at work, and deadlines lurk around every corner. When you get home, you take out your frustrations on your family. Weekends are booked solid with household chores and errands. It’s been months since you spent an evening alone with your partner. There are very few days off where you can get away from the stressors. So how do you handle it? Understanding how you currently respond to stress — for better or worse — is the foundation for successful future stress management.

Evaluating how you deal with stress is the first step in effective stress management. Look for these behavior patterns. Reactions to stress vary.

Some people seem to take everything in stride. Their naturally laid-back attitudes shine through in every situation, another deadline? Bring it on. You needed to be there 10 minutes ago? OK, let’s go. The dishwasher is leaking? No problem, it’ll be a simple repair we can get it done today. Look up who we can call. These types of people never get stressed out because they take immediate action to solve a situation at hand. They look at most situations as a challenge rather than a problem which can take care of by finding how to take care of it or outsourcing it to be done now. Others get anxious at the first sign of trouble. They pace the floor or have difficulty concentrating on the task at hand. Many times they procrastinate rather than taking action. Any interruption or change in plans may cause a problem for them. They are on auto pilot following a set path. If they have to make a decision to take action, it upsets and stresses them out.

Dr. Daniel Hall-FlavinDr. Daniel Hall-Flavin, board certified in general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry, has special interests in adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and psycho genomics. He has served as medical director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence from 1986 to 1999.

His comment is, “With the pace of advances in medicine, informed collaborative relationships between knowledgeable, capable health professionals and informed, proactive individuals we are finding their families are more vital than ever in maintaining balance”. What he discovered was many people suffer from Depersonalization disorder: A feeling of being ‘outside’ your body. What causes depersonalization disorder? How is it treated? Depersonalization — a feeling of unreality or of being “outside” your body — can be a syndrome or a symptom of a mental disorder. It’s often associated with anxiety and stress. These feelings can increase existing anxiety by making you feel like you’re losing control. Although these sensations may be uncomfortable, they’re not harmful. Episodes of depersonalization usually last only a few moments. But they may occur repeatedly. People with persistent stress or anxiety may have longer episodes of depersonalization that come and go over several years. Sometimes anxiety about having another experience with depersonalization may trigger these feelings. Accurate diagnosis of depersonalization and of any accompanying mental disorders is important.

My feeling is these experiences are caused by feeling alone and not accepted by your family and peers. I have seen clients who describe this feeling similar to a panic attack. . It makes no difference where they are or what they are doing at the time. They feel unable to cope with anything and have stop what ever they are doing and sit back and do nothing until the feeling passes. Most of the people feel anxious or stressed out, they begin to breathe more deeply and more frequently (hyperventilate). This reduces carbon dioxide levels in your blood, which causes: lightheadedness, dizziness and unusual feelings, such as being outside your body and observing your actions from a distance. Most the people affected by this syndrome usually have come from dysfunctional families where they feel they have been rejected and abandoned. It is caused by traumatic experiences that come up spontaneously without any notice.

Conventional medical an psychological practitioners think cognitive behavior therapy helps you understand why depersonalization occurs and trains you to stop worrying about the symptoms so that they go away. My view is they will never go away until we address the issue which causes them to rise unexpectedly and release the triggers, activators and catalysts which activate their program.

Of course, these examples are extremes. Most people who have stress responses fall somewhere in the middle. When you feel confident, you’re likely to take new stressors in stride. If you feel cornered or unprepared, your stress level may rise. Look for patterns in your coping strategies.

In the next four articles Dr. Art Martin is going to detail what stress is and how to handle it so you can have freedom from stress. We create stress by our reaction to it. In reality, there are only stressful people who react to stress. In the example above the person who takes action and responds to the situation never gets stressed out. He or she takes control of the situation at hand and solves the issue before it becomes a problem. Dr. Art Martin has been working with people to help them overcome the conflicts in their lives for thirty years. He has developed a therapy process described as Energy Medicine and Energy Psychology. The specific modality is described as Neuro/Cellular Reprogramming. It is a process to take control of your mind and empower yourself to take control of your life.

Stress Relief Begins With Understanding What Causes Stress

StressWhat causes stress? Most people searching for stress relief don’t know what is causing their stress. Whenever I ask people what causes stress in their life, they will usually say “this person” or “that experience”. Both answers are wrong.

Those things are just external events. It is how the person interprets or perceives the event that determines whether or not it is a stressor for them.

So how do we interpret events? We interpret events based on our values, beliefs and early childhood conditioning. Everything we are exposed to has to go through this perception filter.

Picture yourself standing inside an invisible box that is made up of everything you believe to be true – based on your past conditioning. Every single thing that has ever happened to you; every sight, sound, taste, smell or touch; every thought or experience has gone into creating this perception or interpretation filter.

In the same way, everything that happens to you now is given a meaning, based on all of the past experiences that make up your perception filter.

For example, let’s say that you see something. The instant that you see it, your brain is comparing it to everything that you have ever experienced, that could be anything like what you are looking at right now. Then it will assign a meaning to what you are seeing. If it fits your belief system, whether positive or negative, it is accepted as true. If it doesn’t, it is rejected.

In reality, what we believe to be true may be absolutely false, but for us, it is true, because we have been trained or conditioned to believe that it is true. Paraphrasing Shirley MacLaine, the actress and author: “We do not see the world as it is; we see it as we are.”

Stress

In the above example, if what you are looking at now, even vaguely resembles something from your past that caused you stress then, you will react negatively toward it now, just as if now was then. If you are looking for stress relief today, your belief system is what is causing you the stress. Unfortunately, most people have no idea how much stress they are actually experiencing – until they start to have problems. Until they start to experience what I call the Five U’s. They are unhappy, unhealthy, unproductive, unprofitable or unfit to live with.

Have you ever heard the statement: “This is the last straw?” or “The straw that broke the camel’s back”? Imagine holding a piece of straw. It weighs almost nothing. How can something so light possibly break a camel’s back? It could – if the camel was already so loaded down, so heavily burdened, that one more piece of straw could potentially break the camel’s back.

So the question then becomes: “Is it the one additional straw that broke the camel’s back or the accumulation of the terrible burden the camel was already carrying? What do you think?

The same question can be asked of us, in regards to the heavy burden of stress that we may be carrying. Most of us are not aware of the amount of stress we actually have. Although it is important to know what causes stress, it is more important to know what our stress level is – before we start to experience problems. If high enough, that knowledge should certainly stimulate us to look for tools that will give us the stress relief we need if we want to live healthy, happy, productive lives.

3 Causes Why Stress Management Programs Do Not Work

Stress Relief ProgrammeIn today’s high pressure society, stress comes from many things.. And it seems that more people succumb every week. Up to 90& of all visits to the doctor are for stress related conditions. And the statistics don’t stop there. Every day the newspapers scream about how many days are lost due to stress, and how much this is costing industry. And new stress relief programmes and stress courses are springing up all the time. So why isn’t all this working? Why are more people than ever suffering from stress?

There are three main reasons for this:

1. People like the concept but dislike the work

This has been said before. Many people buy weight loss videos, foreign language programmes, gym memberships and so on because they want to lose weight, learn a foreign language a, get fit etc. And this is all very impressive because these things do work. They all come with testimonials from satisfied customers saying just how easy this course was to follow and how much their life has improved as a result.

But buying the course, programme, membership is not what it takes to make it work. You have to take action. And It is just the same for stress relief programmes.

Many people Think that simply buying a yoga video will help reduce their stress levels; or that attending a stress relief workshop and returning to exactly the same stressful lifestyle without incorporating anything different is sufficient. It is not.

Bringing stress levels down is an active process. Just like losing weight or getting fit, stress management needs action if it is to be successful.

2. Little Motivation and No Stigma

Change can be scary but when it is clear to everyone whether you have succeeded (you lose 10 pounds) or failed (you are still smoking), it can be very scary. People like success. A strong motivational upside will encourage people to give it their best shot. But this is where Stress reduction programmes differ from other programmes. Whereas there is a social stigma by and large, to smoking, obesity and alcoholism, there is no stigma to being stressed.

And worse than this, big companies can make it plain that they need employees who can “take the stress”. Employees attending Stress management programmes could Lose out on promotion as “not being able to take it”. So there is actually a motivation for people to stay stressed.

3. Over Scheduled Lifestyle

When you are stressed out, you have very little space in your head to take on new ideas. In fact the very thought of attending a Stress reduction programme can make you more stressed! And people who already have very busy lives tend to focus their time where they think they’ll get the best “returns”. So they spend more time trying to make their boss happy, or running the local school fete even though they know that following a stress management programme would make them happier and healthier in the long term.

Stress relief programmes work. But it will take a radical shift in the attitudes of most people and most employers before they are allowed to work. And in the meantime, our society will continue to get more stressed and over time, more ill. Don’t we owe it to ourselves to make stress reduction a priority?

What Is Stress?

Stress

Stress is difficult for scientists to define because it is a subjective sensation associated with varied symptoms that differ for each of us. Hans Selye set out the first definition. Many scientists see stress as a reaction to events in our life which cause a reaction in our body. Stress is an emotional physiological reaction which everyone experiences as he or she encounters changes in life. Sudden changes in our environment will cause our body to set up our flight or fight mechanism to protect us from the perceived danger.. They can have positive or negative effects. Stress can make you deal with situations which you may be procrastinating over and therefore force you to take notice of the challenges or impending crisis which may cause conflicts. The negative effects when you allow the issue to become continuous or get you down can cause depression, heart disease or even cancer. When we can’t deal with an issue we unconsciously look for way out of the crisis. Avoiding the issue does not make it go away. All it does is delay the consequences. If the trauma becomes obsessive we escape into a split or multiple personality. At this point we have lost control over activity in our life and go on auto pilot. (My books, “Your Body Is Talking Are You Listening” and “ReParenting Yourself”, go into detail on how handle this conflict.)

We all have stress sometimes. For some people, it happens before having to speak in public. For other people, it might be before a first date, having to meet a deadline for a report or simply asserting themselves in a conversation. The financial crisis today can cause more stress. What causes stress for you may not be stressful for someone else. Sometimes stress is helpful – it can encourage you to meet a deadline or get things done. But long-term stress can increase the risk of diseases like depression, heart disease, and a variety of other problems. A stress-related illness called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after an event like war, a traumatic event such as, physical or sexual assault, or a natural disaster.

StressNot all people suffer or struggle with stress. Stress only exists if you allow it to affect you. As such, when we evaluate the stressor which affects people we find that there are people who do not react to stress. At this point we have to understand that stress is not universal, affecting all people. There are stressful people and there are people who do not react to stress. What is the magic quality that protects some people from stress? From my prospective it has to do with knowing and accepting who you are. Knowing that you are all right with you and knowing outside effects can not cause conflict within you. Try to follow the advice in Reinhold Niebuhr’s, serenity prayer, “Grant me the courage to change the things I can change, the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, and the wisdom to know the difference.” In other words you can not have any effect on the outcome drop it and do not worry about it. Which means stress is worry and is only fear that something is going to affect me and I can not control it, which causes me to create stress. Depression is loss of control and attempting to escape from the stressor which you may not recognize.

Many of these effects are due to increased sympathetic nervous system activity and an outpouring of adrenaline, cortisol and other stress-related hormones. Certain types of chronic and more insidious stress due to loneliness, poverty, bereavement, depression and frustration due to discrimination are associated with impaired immune system resistance to viral linked disorders. These range from the common cold and herpes to AIDS and cancer. Stress can have effects on other brain neurotransmitters, additional small chemical messengers such as interleukins, seratonin, prostaglandins and hormones as well as crucial enzyme systems, and metabolic activities that are still unknown. Research in these areas may help to explain how stress can contribute to depression, anxiety and its diverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract, skin and other organs. The physical reaction is to increase our heart rate and to dump adrenaline into our blood stream in readiness for the need to act or deal with the stressor.

Since our mind interprets all sensory input literally, the perceived effect may not always be a synonym for distress. Situations like a steep roller coaster ride that causes fear and anxiety for some can prove highly pleasurable for others. Winning a race or being invited to speak at a conference could cause as much stress as a negative experience. Stress is an unavoidable consequence of life, yet there are people who are not affected by stress. There are some stresses like the loss of parent, partner, friend or loss of a job or position that you can’t control or avoid and others that you can prevent or influence. The trick is in learning how to distinguish between the two so that you’re not constantly frustrated like Don Quixote tilting at windmills and devote your time and talent to areas where you can make a difference. When we learn to understand and cope with loss we no longer experience grieving over a loss. What IS — IS, it is in the past. There isn’t anything we can do about the past. There is something we can do about our situation in the present. How do we cope with it all?

We will cover that in the next article in this series.

Dealing with stress can be accomplished in many ways. Exercise, diet, herbal preparations and many of the alternative therapies can help to relieve stress. The best method is to be able to control it with your mind. When you are balanced in your acceptance and validation of self you do not self reject which is one of the main causes of stress. The methods that contribute to more stress are alcohol, tobacco, street drugs, feeling burned out and Chronic Fatigue. Psycho active drugs may produce an effect that appears to reduce or relieve stress and depression but this is just temporary since you get addicted to the drugs to keep the stress level down or to elevate yourself from depression. Sometimes the side effects are more traumatic than stress. The key is to recognize stress can’t affect you. Some people will not accept or believe we can counteract stress with our mind, but can be done very effectively.

ReParenting Youself Book

Dr. Art Martin has been working in the personal transformation field helping people to redirect their life for peace, happiness, harmony and joy for 30 years. He has discovered the root cause of the majority of our problems begin in the first four years of our life. The main cause is the dysfunctional parenting program that was given to us by our parents. Control, authority, discipline and compliance do not work as can be seen by all the dysfunctional children who grow up and perpetuate the program as it has gone on for generations after generations. Being unable to cope with stress is one of the major effects of not being able to understand what the eight qualities of unconditional love are. Most people are adult children, yet to understand what I just stated you have to have a frame of reference to recognize the meaning. The majority of us can’t even remember much of our childhood, yet we do not want to acknowledge something was not right in our childhood. Most of us grew up feeling rejected, not recognized, validated or accepted which nearly destroyed our self esteem, self worth and self confidence. Where do we go from here?

We need to ReParent Ourselves and grow up again. This is the topic of his new book “ReParenting Yourself”. In future articles we will write about how to control, release and manage stress so we can have peace, happiness, joy and harmony in our life.
