Within a few hours of shampooing it refuses to stay full and light and it takes on a stringy appearance. Along with looking oily, greasy hair can appear lifeless, lank and dull. Does this sound familiar to you? Do you ask yourself &#8220;why is my hair greasy?&#8221; Even if they wash it everyday, others can judge that the sufferer does not wash their hair frequently and doesn&#8217;t have good hygiene. This can cause much social embarrassment.</p>
<p> The grease found in hair is called sebum and is oil that is produced natural by the body. Each of the hairs on your head has a gland called the sebaceous gland immediately under the skin, this gland produces sebum. Oil in greasy hair protects each strand form split ends and dryness, and is in fact a sign of healthy hair. Sebum is made as lubrication for the skin and hair, providing a protective barrier and preventing drying. Sebum is the body&#8217;s own natural moisturizer.</p>
<p> Greasy hair is excess of sebum in the hair and comes as a result of an over production of sebum (oil) from over active sebaceous glands, stimulated by hormones called androgens. Androgens are male hormones that are present in both men and women, but are higher in men. Androgens do two things: First, they enlarge the sebaceous glands in the skin. Second, they cause these glands to increase oil production.</p>
<p> Fluctuating hormones can cause greasy as hormones play a part in sebum production. Greasy hair is most common in women because of either pregnancy or monthly cycle, older women going through the menopause, and teenagers experiencing puberty. Stress can be a contributory factor in greasy hair as it is known to affect hormones levels. People with fine hair on their head may experience excessive greasy hair as they have more hair follicles and more sebaceous glands producing more sebum.</p>
<p> There are a number of external factors in that cause greasy hair. Washing your hair too often can increase the production of sebum as the sebaceous glands produce more sebum to combat the stripping of oils from the scalp and hair which can happen as a result of frequent washing. Vigorous hair and scalp scrubbing can stimulate hair grease. Touching hair can also over-stimulate glands, as can brushing vigorously which carry oil through your hair. Pollutants in the everyday environment can cause hair to look greasy, along with product build-up at the roots from over-use of hair styling products.</p>
<p> There are also many internal causes of greasy too. I have already mentioned fluctuating hormone levels, but one of the main culprits when it comes to internal causes of greasy hair is diet. Western diets that tend to be greasy, high in fat and sugar, processed and containing additives which can be a major cause of greasy hair as the high fat content increases oil levels in and on the skin. Hormones can be found in meat in the western, adding to the unbalanced hormone levels. A diet lacking in vitamin B can also contribute towards greasy hair.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The secret of how to treat, cure, prevent and avoid greasy hair is to treat it from both the outside, and the inside. For the outside: avoid brushing your hair too frequently, and when you brush avoid brushing your hair vigorously. When you wash your hair, the best shampoo for greasy hair is a mild-ph extra cleansing/clarifying shampoo that is formulated for greasy hair. Avoid moisturizing shampoos as they can leave some oil in your hair to protect against dryness. When washing your hair, avoid scrubbing your hair and scalp vigorously, lightly massage your hair and scalp instead.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When shampooing, leave the shampoo in your hair for approximately 5 minutes for a better clean. Rinse and shampoo again if necessary. It&#8217;s up to you as to how often you should wash your hair. Once or twice a week is the ideal but to find your own balance of washing and oil production start with washing once a day, reducing how often you wash as you find that balance. If you are going to condition your hair, use a conditioner designed especially for greasy hair, and apply the conditioner not to the roots but to the mid and ends of your hair. If you use a hair dryer to style your hair, heat will stimulate oil production, so don&#8217;t let it get too hot.</p>

Frustration is more likely to occur for those that are transitioning, simply because of the difficulty of having two textures to deal with. There are things you can do to cope with having two textures and the comb-out process.</p>
<p> Never comb your hair when it is dry. Two textures at once is hard enough but combing while dry only increases the stress on the fine border between the relaxed and unrelaxed hair.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Use a good oil-based hair lotion or moisturizer. When you comb your hair you want it to be easy with no tugging. Hair lotion makes it easier to comb and helps to reduce tangles.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Have a routine. In my own personal experience I found I was much calmer in the morning if I had a routine. At night I would wet my hair a little, add my moisturizer and comb out my hair from tip to scalp using my wide toothed comb. I would then braid it in two inverted cornrows and tie it up with a non-cotton scarf. In the morning I would either wear my cornrows or take them down and enjoy my manageable hair! Your routine may be slightly different but the important thing is that you have one that includes moisturizing and detangling.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Even if you get frustrated, do not give up. Remember how satisfying it will be to comb thru your lustrous, thick, Rudy Huxtable mane.</p>
<p> <strong>Freedom</strong><br /> While you may get frustrated sometimes you can also expect to enjoy a great deal of freedom. That is freedom in styling options, washing your hair more often, and with that enjoying more outdoors activities regardless of the weather. With your natural hair there are many elegant styles to experiment with, such as two-strand twists, large French braids, and gorgeous buns displaying your wavy texture in the front. The styles don&rsquo;t end there. There&rsquo;s afros, ponytails, flat twists, braid-outs and whatever else you create.</p>
<p> Your natural hair can get rained on and you don&rsquo;t need to be bothered because hair needs moisture and you are not trying to maintain an unnatural texture.</p>
<p> <strong>Self-Discovery</strong><br /> Lastly one of the most phenomenal things you can expect, if you seek it, is self-discovery. Many times women learn how to care for their own hair without a stylist when going natural. Your confidence in your self will grow because you discover that you can do it. After many years of someone else caring for your hair it is possible to feel helpless or uninvolved with it, but once you do become involved it is absolutely empowering. <p> This can be done with the hands, or with the aid of any mechanical electrical apparatus, or appliances with, or without, rubbing alcohol, liniments, antiseptics, oils, powder, creams, lotions, ointments, or other similar preparations that can be helpful in promoting increased blood flow, lymphatic and healing.</p>
